At 1:30 p.m. today, the NM Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on SB89, the Supported Decision-Making Act. The hearing will take place in Room 311 of the Capitol building.
If passed, this bill would offer a less-restrictive alternative to guardianship. Under a Supported Decision-Making Agreement, a person with disabilities retains their right to make their own decisions, while memorializing the friends, family, and/or professionals who will help them gather information and make that decision. If passed, this Bill would be a huge step forward in self-advocacy and for protecting the legal and civil rights of New Mexicans with disabilities.
