The Brain Injury Advisory Council’s mission is to develop a comprehensive statewide system to support citizens of NM living with brain injury, increase public awareness of brain injury and support preventative measures to decrease the incidence of brain injury.
The Council, comprised of individuals with brain injury, their families and professionals from rural, frontier and metro areas of the state, meet 6 times a year to identify and address the needs of the brain injury community. Projects have included the production of the documentary "every 21 seconds…", participation in the NM Helmets for Kids Coalition, advocacy for the funding development of the self directed community based waiver for individuals with brain injury, the revision and distribution of the NM Brain Injury Resource Manual, a yearly postcard series highlighting the stories of New Mexican citizens living with brain injury, and hosting two summits identifying the gaps and needs of the service delivery system for veterans and active military living with brain injury.
"The New Mexico Brain Injury Advisory Council is appointed by the governor and the Council exists in statute. There are between 18 and 24 members from all areas of the state. Members of the council include individuals with brain injuries, family members, healthcare professionals, and representatives from agencies that provide help for persons living with brain injuries.
The New Mexico Brain Injury Advisory Council has a twofold mission. First, we advocate for the development of a statewide system of comprehensive, community based resources that will maximize the personal choices and functional independence of persons with brain injuries.
The NM BIAC shares administrative support with the DDPC.
